I've been a student of Shaolin Do Kung Fu since 1989 and an an instructor since 1992. My current rank is 6th degree Black Belt Master.
In August 2009, I was commissioned to write a book called the Spartan Warrior Workout, available at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble stores and online. It's a training book to teach you some basic kettlebell, barbell and body weight exercises safely and correctly and then give you 2 levels of programming to help you get ripped! My second book, the Ultimate Kettlebell Workbook came out in June 2011.
I also recently spoke at Mike Robertson's Midwest Performance Seminar (August 2011) where I spoke about the importance of using proper progression with kettlebells. It is very important to learn the basics before attempting the more technically advance kettlebell exercises and many people don't do this.
In 2002, after searching for ways to improve my speed, strength and endurance I ran across an article that described Pavel Tsatsouline's kettlebell certification course and kettlebells in general. After purchasing a book and video (yes a tape), I started learning the basic movements with a dumbbell. Shortly thereafter I purchased my 1st 16k (35lb) kettlebell and in September of 2002 made the trip to St. Paul, Mn for what was then a 2 day course. There I trained under Pavel, Steve Maxwell, Brett Jones and Mike Mahler and learned a lot about not only kettlebells but new approaches to health and fitness.
After the certification I began teaching kettlebells to some of my kung fu students on Saturdays and doing 4 to 6 hours seminars to teach kettlebells to anyone who wanted to learn. I've traveled to Winchester, Ky, Atlanta, Ga and Cincinnati, Oh teaching 1 and 2 day workshops, some of which were co-taught with Steve Cotter who is now the president of the IKFF (International Kettlebell Fitness Federation).
After teaching part-time for 5 years, I was laid off from my IT job and decided I'd had enough of the corporate world. I decided to strike out on my own and started teaching group kettlebell classes at several yoga studios and martial arts schools in Louisville. That was January 2007
We are fast approaching our 5th year of helping people get in better shape and shed unwanted fat.! In June of 2007 I moved into my first location; a small space that was formerly a Physical Therapy office. In November of 2010, we moved to our present location 2508 Plantside Dr. The new facility is much larger and more appropriate for what we do
In May of 2007 I became a CrossFit affiliate. CrossFit is known for it's varied workout routines focusing on the Olympic lifts and other barbell work along with traditional body-weight exercise. I adapted the CrossFit paradigm to kettlebells, and my classes offer a good mix of kettlebells, barbells, body-weight, Clubbells and other old-time tools such as tire flipping, sledgehammer work and sled dragging and pushing.
All these tools and the varied workouts keep the classes exciting and challenging; you never know what you are going to do until the warm-ups are over!
I'm also certified with Steve Cotter's IKFF and as a Coach with Valery Fedorenko's American Kettlebell Club.
I re-certified as a CST Instructor in August 2008, completing a rigorous 3 day course and taking an extensive written exam.
CST or Circular Strength Training is the brainchild of Scott Sonnon and promotes a health first paradigm. We balance strength, with (joint) mobility and flexibility (Prasara Yoga) to create a well-balanced individual. The health first model means we focus less on external factors such as body composition and muscle tone and more on create a synergy of good joint health, proper movements, yoga for both strength and pliability and strength through the use of external resistance.
I've taken all of these tools and ideas and created a unique system to help people regain their lost health and vitality. My methods work for everyone from those seeking to lose fat to high level martial artists seeking to gain an advantage over their opponents to tennis players seeking more endurance and power, to those with physical handicaps such as Cerebral Palsy.
Our systems work, but so do you. You have to put in the work, maintain a high level of intensity for the duration of the main workout, which usually lasts 30-40 minutes. The entire class is an hour.
